Problems With Sending E-mail – Elf Knows It [ARCHIVED]

Valerie sent a message using the contact form at

Hi Elf, wondering if you could help me.  With the last couple of months I’ve been having trouble sending emails.  I use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and  my address is an one. When I send emails to certain addresses   (not all) I get an automated messages back from system administrator saying  it’s “undeliverable” with the following message:

Jemma on 16/07/2008 15:00
553 sorry, that domain isn’t in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1

Just wondering if you could enlighten me as to how this can be fixed.

Hi Valerie,

I see this problem a lot when mail is being sent using an Eircom mail account, on a non Eircom internet connection. It’s a spam precaution in place by Eircom to stop their mail service being used for spam.

Are you on an Eircom connection? If not, let me know which company you are with and we can take it from there. If you are with Eircom, make sure your outgoing mail server in Outlook is set to to do this:

  1. Click Tools on the menu

  2. Click E-mail Accounts…
and E-mail Accounts wizard screen should appear.

  3. Under the E-mail heading,
click View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next

  4. On the E-mail Account setting
screen, select the account you use, then click on

  5. In the Outgoing mail server
    field, type in

  6. Click on Finish

If you are not using Eircom’s Internet service, let me know what provider you are with and I can tell you what settings to use for them. You can write back using the box below.

Hope this helps!
